Accessibility Works – Phase 1
Bishop Gilpin CE Primary School, Wimbledon
The existing rear of the school was becoming unusable by both vehicles and pedestrians. The existing access road facilitated vehicles leading into a school car park and was the only route for the weekly refuse lorries, and provided the main pedestrian route for pupils and staff to access rear classrooms and the main playground. The access road was becoming very undulated and had many trip hazards along with being very susceptible to significant water ponding following heavy down pours of rain which made many areas inaccessible.
Our team removed the existing undulated access road which comprised of heavy duty reinforced concrete apron slabs and carried out excavations to make level adjustments throughout the affected areas. We installed new sub-bases and resurfaced the access road in asphalt. We made adjustments to the existing retaining walls to create a new enclosed bin store for the refuse lorries, installed new access ramps for pupils into classrooms, and installed new surface water drainage features to mitigate future water ponding issues.
Our team were required to deliver the planned works in a short time frame to ensure the works were commenced and completed before the pupils and staff returned from the half term.
